Honorary Life Members were
individuals who were recognized by the Board of
Governors as having rendered eminently distinguished
service to the Society or to the maritime community
per Article VI, Section 2(d) of the Society Bylaws
adopted in 1981 and amended in 1994. The Honorary
Life Member category was eliminated in the revised
Bylaws adopted on November 13, 2008.

No Honorary Life Member awards were
presented in 1969, 1970, 1980, 1984, 1987 or 1989.
-
Two Honorary Life Member awards were
presented in 1964, 1974, 1979, and 1986.
-
Three Honorary Life Member awards
were presented in 1999.
-
A total of 52 individuals received
the award over 51 years from 1949 to 1999.
-
The Honorary Life Member award was
discontinued after 1999.
The Society subsequently introduced two new awards:
